the last time i went to the mca was in 2007 for the jeff koons exhibit. i can’t say that i’m a huge fan or a fan at all, but i was glad to have seen his work in person. mostly so i can have some authority to talk shit. currently on display is jenny holzers new work entitled “protect.” the show is beautiful and her video installation work is mesmerizing. i have to say i was most excited by the new wing that has opened up there. finally i can say i’ve seen kara walker, cindy sherman, ed ruscha, joseph grigely, david wojnarowicz, and sarah sze in person. the david wojnarowicz piece is so beautiful. its amazing to me to finally see something in person. the piece is suddenly alive and you are a witness to it. all of this work reminded me of the time i went to the andy warhol museum in pittsburgh on a tour stop with ida. it was a cold winter night, and we escaped into the museum for a performance they were going to have there. i walked through the corridors and went from floor one, to two, to three, and finally to the fourth floor. Each section was more impressive then the last and finally I understood why warhol is so important in contemporary art. thus this is an encouragement to go to the museum on free day and stand in front of art. see something that is real. experience something that is real.

Really? I was so let down by the HOlzer exhibition. I wanted something new and fresh, and instead I felt like the whole thing was cold and uninspired. Did like Kara Walker, though, as always. Horrifyingly, my mom said, “Oh, these are so cute! They’d be great in a kid’s room.”

Well I should say, that I was inspired by the video instillation aspect. Or more the process then the work itself. Her other work was visually beautiful, but the content was lacking. Although work about the war is important, it lacked something inspiring, something new about what happened in the war. But I was inspired by joseph grigely, and david and kara. and i think its amazing and horrifying that your mother said that. amazing!

To Annie:
I had the same feelings, and said so on my blog for the journal glasstire.com. the Grigely was an antidote to the Holzer - which I loathed.
