“The dripping… well, if it happens, it happens; it does not take anything from the work. The dripping just proves that you were not trying to control the work, but the work was developing by itself and if it drips, it’s a natural part in the evolution of the work.”

i cant say that ive been a fan of k.h. for that long. i always had these ideas of what i thought he might be like and maybe some of them were true. theres no way to tell. but after i read the new k.h. book by jeffrey deitch and a handful of other writers i realized how much he cared about people. how much he cared about the act of creating without all these fancy elevated ideas. he just wanted to do what he did. and that i can respect.

i love keith haring. he really did care about people. many years ago when i was quitting speed, somebody had spray-painted a keith haring design on sidewalks all over town. it said “queer life is fresh, speed is whack!” every time i found myself standing on that graffiti or looking down at it, i felt like someone was rooting for me!
